RICHARD Yee is probably the man forgotten but not around this time.
Yee proved that he is still a force to reckon with by scoring a game-high 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds to power Burger King to a close 102-99 win against Barako Bull on Friday in the 35th PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
Yee, the 10-year veteran out of University of Santo Tomas (UST), sparkled in the third quarter by firing 11 of the Whopper's 28 points in that period on the way to a huge 80-67 spread at the start of the fourth quarter.
"It's really nice to contribute on your team but winning stays important," said Yee, who tallied 8-of-10 shooting from the field. "I'm just hoping for our team to win more games especially in times like this when winning is hard to achieve."
The Energy Boosters, who was eyeing to break an eight-game slump, came-up with a scoring charge in the pay-off frame, 32-22, but rookie Benedict Fernandez muffed a game-tying three-pointer in the last seconds of the game.
"We're just trying to avoid being eliminated early. We just want to play a little longer this conference and see what our chances are in the wildcard," said Burger King coach Yeng Guiao, who is now 4-0 against his former team.
Guiao feels an outright spot in the quarterfinals of the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup is now beyond the Whoppers' reach. "But I still have hope for this team. If we gain our confidence I think we can be a formidable team."
Beau Belga and Gary David scored 14 points each, while Ronjay Buenafe scattered 12 points and JR Quinahan had a double-double 10 points and 12 rebounds to improve Burger King's record to 5-9.
David's two free throws saved the Whopper in the last minute mark.
Ronnie Matias had nine and Chico Lanete contributed with eight points.
Barako Bull recorded the franchise's longest losing streak of nine in a row and tied Coca-Cola for ninth spot with a 2-11 mark.
Yousif Aljamal scored 19 points and Richard Alonzo added a career-high 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Felix Belano chipped in 16 points, 10 in the fourth quarter which helped bring Barako Bull back in the game.
